Get Ready for NYC’s Commercial Waste Zones Program

Thursday, June 18, 2026 (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

New York City has adopted a zoning model for commercial waste and recycling collection that divides the City into 20 distinct Commercial Waste Zones (CWZs).

The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will authorize only three (3) carting companies to service customers in each zone and only five (5) carting companies to service dumpsters & compactors citywide. By law, ALL businesses will be required to enter a written service agreement with an authorized carting company from their respective zone.

The session will include:

  • High-Level Program Introduction: What is the Commercial Waste Zones (CWZ) program and how does it impact all businesses across the 5 boroughs
  • Important Contracting Guidelines: What requirements must all businesses and authorized haulers follow to maintain compliance with CWZ program rules
  • Building-Specific Guidelines: How must single vs. multi-tenant buildings, brokers, property management companies, and cleaning services approach CWZ contracting, invoicing, and payments
  • How Businesses/Buildings Can Prepare: In preparation for future zone roll-outs, what can businesses/buildings do to prepare and minimize disruptions in service
